Not here for a $10,000 coaching package

I certified as a life coach with the Life Coach School (LCS) in September 2020. While I credit the teachings of LCS for helping me becoming the secure, confident, self-expressed version of me that I am today, I’m not 100% on board with all that they teach. For example… A secret between us: I’m actually a certified “life and weight loss coach” because the school values weight loss as a universal desire and includes weight loss coaching in the curriculum. I, on the other hand, am a firm believer of Health at Every Size (HAES) and want to see fatness included in disability rights.

LCS and I also differ on the value we place on making money. I support LCS founder Brooke Castillo inspiring hundreds of people to set “unrealistic” financial goals in their business, because of the personal growth that’s required and the value they will create in the world by doing so. I am also incredibly inspired by the 25 LCS coaches who made $1 million or more in their coaching business in 2021 (24 of them women, three of whom were pregnant at the time and two of which openly identify as learning disabled). But I do not share the LCS ethos to make money for the sake of making money.

Most high-earning coaches do so by charging a small number of people a very large sum of money. $10,000 and $20,000 six month coaching packages are common. This cuts off access to transformational, life-changing tools to all but the 1%. Even charging for smaller increments of time at a therapist-level rate (like I do) cuts off access to most people in need of help.

To be clear: coaching is worth every cent, even at high ticket prices. Most of us scoff at the price tag of one-on-one personal development work not because we don’t think it’s worth it, but because we don’t think we’re worth it. Even if we have the money to lay down, we are uncomfortable investing in ourselves.

We shell out hundreds every month for gym memberships, health foods, and spas as “self-care” because our society values how our bodies look. But what if society valued how strong and resilient our brains are? I’m encouraged that mental health services are slowly becoming more mainstream and not just for “crazy” people, but mindset coaching is empowering in a way that traditional therapy does not cover.

I offer mindset coaching for the climate conscious to become more empowered, secure, and at peace in an uncertain world. I want to put these tools in the hands of those who need it the most. Yet it is unlikely those who need it the most have a few extra hundred dollars lying around in the bank. Or even a bank account at all.

Climate change and environmental injustice disproportionately impacts BIPOC and the poor. I can’t consciously offer my service at the going cost for coaching to those who have historically lacked access to resources. It would be unjust, and against my values.

That is why I offer free writings on my Instagram and this blog. That is why I offer a sliding scale rate and discounts for marginalized identities. That is why I will soon be sharing free webinars and podcasts for the public via YouTube.

And that is why I ask you to support me on Ko-fi, a direct payment platform for creators.

Through grassroots support, I will be able to focus my work to reach the most amount of people at the lowest cost. I will be able to spend more time learning from anti-racist, feminist business leaders. I will be able to pay for services that make my life a little easier, so that I don’t burn out trying to save others from burn-out.

You can read more about Ko-fi and sign up to support my work here.
